International Direct Dialing was set up in 1964.
Country codes were attributed in Geneva by the International Telecommunications Union ITU.

Middle and Far East Countries got attributed a 2-digit or 3-digit country code starting with +9.

Larger countries have a 2-digit code,
smaller countries a 3-digit code.
Only USA + Canada, both home countries of the inventor of the Phone, Alexander Bell
got the 1-digit country code +1.
The only other country with a 1-digit country code is Russia +7.

Four countries have a double digit code,
France +33, UK +44, Brazil +55 and Thailand +66.

Afghanistan received the country code +93.
